What Causes Painful Blisters In The Vaginal Area After A Protected Sex?

Posted on Tue, 16 Jun 2015
Question: hopefully you can. a good friend had protected sex about several days ago. later, she used monistat for a possible yeast infection. within two hours of using it, she was in incredible pain, so bad she was vomiting and broke out in blisters from her vaginal area, up around her sides and on her buttocks. the blisters are actually bursting and bleeding. she is highly allergic to polyster, if contact on her body occurs she swells up. i use this as an example of her sensitivity. she saw a gyn who saw her for 10 minuts and said it was herpes. she would not address the possiblity of an allergic reaction to monistat. she took a herpes test and wouldn't give my friend anything until friday when test results come in. that was the first visit. then to the er and they gav her a topical cortisone cream which did alleviate a small amount of pain. now it is worse again so another trip to er; they will not treat her, they are all adamant it is herpes. did give her pain meds. are her symptoms more herpes related than a possible major allergic reaction? i have looked up herpes, know they have blisters but i thought around vaginal area or mouth. would those blisters bleed? she has had this for three days now.

Brief Answer:
Likely herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Painful blisters in the vaginal area and buttocks are likely to be herpes. However, monistat (miconazole) also has a possible side effect of allergic reactions which are usually rashes, burning and itching. Painful blisters are not usually seen as a side effect of monistat, still a possibility can be there.
I would suggest your friend to wait for the results of herpes test, which will come soon, as proper treatment of herpes is required for the complete relief. Topical cortisone cream is not recommended as it may cause superimposed infection. She can take pain medications.

If possible can you send picture of the lesions for complete diagnosis. There is a feature to upload reports and pictures available on this page.

Wishing you both good health.
