What Causes Painful Lip Sore That Increases In Size?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: I have a sore on my lip that is kinda bothersome. doesn't really hurt too much, just a tad. It seems to be getting bigger in last hour or so. Is it a canker sore? I think I have had a canker sore before but never one this large & that is visibly making my lip bigger on the one side. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Can be a canker sore, answer few questions

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
I have gone through your complaints and reviewed the attached photographs.
It can be a canker sore though the pictures are not very characteristic and it is not that painful.
I would like to ask you few questions:
Is their any history of blisters prior to the appearance of the ulcer?
What is the duration of the ulcer?
Are you taking drugs for anyother ailment?
Are you suffering from some other disease?
Is their any history of trauma to the lip?
Have you used or applied anything on the lip?
Are you having ulcers anywhere else on the body?
Kindly revert back with the answers.

Dr Asmeet

Brief Answer:
Most probably bacterial infection, less likely canker sore

Detailed Answer:
According to your history it can be a bacterial infection of the lip or less likely a canker sore.

If I were your treating doctor I would recommend you to apply antibiotic ointment like neosporin ointment or mupirocin ointment on the affected area twice daily. For pain I would recommend my patients to take tablet ibuprofen or diclofenac. I don't know whether these medicines will be available as over the counter in your country.

Dr Asmeet
