What Causes Painful Menstruation?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I have an overwhelming craving to eat powered chalk, all the time. I eat a small amount...maybe 2 or 3 sticks a day. My iron levels are normal, as were all of my other blood lab values. My periods are extremely painful and tend to be irregular. I also don't sleep well. Beyond that, I have no other medical conditions. The craving has come and gone multiple times over my lifetime. I have list some weight this go around with my chalk earing, I'm not sure if that actually has anything to do with it. I am overweightl, so losing a few is not a big deal. What would be you suggestion?

Brief Answer:
possibe adenomyosis or fibroid uterus

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
The most likely cause for your painful menses at your age could be ADENOMYOSIS or fibroid uterus. So it is important that an ultrasound pelvis be done to establish the uterine size and rule out the above causes. The irregularity of menses can be attributed to possible high insulin resistance due to obesity and /or PCOD, which can be ruled out with a hormonal profile.
Craving to eat powdered chalk is indicative of possible helminthiasis with possible vitamin b12 or calcium deficiency. Please get a stool culture done as well and take a course of antihelminth medication like albendazole , available on prescription.
Please meet your PCP and discuss the above possible causes to take an informed decision.
