What Causes Painful Swelling In The Testicle After Injury?

Question: I was playing basketball 4 days ago and noticed some left side genital pain when I was sitting afterwards. I don't remember any particular trauma. Upon inspection I found the left testicular vein was swollen and painful to touch extending from the testicle to the belt line, about the girth of my thumb. I have always had a left side varicocele. The next day it was painful to touch or sit. It was a little better on day 3 with the pain not going as far superior, only to the pubic hair. On day 4 bruising set in with a large area of the left scrotum and the area on the top base of the penis turning purple. The swollen vein is not as swollen but still very tender to touch. Should I be concerned?

As an Urologist,i can understand your concern.

It's most likely a hematoma,arising out of a blunt trauma to the left testicular vein.
The cause of the changes,,can be treated after a proper diagnosis.
For this you'll need to do certain tests and get it examined by an Urologist.
1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,creatinine,RBS,LFT,and platelets.
3. doppler ultrasound scan of scrotum, with KUB.

After seeing these reports,an expert opinion regarding treatment can be given.
You may send these reports here,for an expert opinion.

In the meanwhile,you may use a good scrotal support,to keep it elevated.
You may also take some anti-inflammatory analgesics tablets,twice daily.

Is there a significant chance that treatment would be necessary or would a testicular vein hematoma most likely heal on it's own? It would be very difficult for me to get to a urologist before Friday. Am I risking greater problems by waiting? I realize without a proper diagnosis it is impossible to say, just trying to weigh the risks.

Just waiting without treatment,entails risks,which can complicate matters.
If it's due to a hematoma from vein rupture,it could get infected.
That will make matters difficult for you.
