What Causes Painful Swelling Of Foot?

Question: My son is 23 years old and has been having a problem with is foot swelling. He works in Shipping and Receiving sometimes and it seems to swell when it hot out and on his feet. When he is sitting at his job it seems it does not swell. When it first occurred the swelling went up his leg to his knee and the tendon there was sort of painful.
