What Causes Painful Weak Legs After A History Of Lower Back Pain?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Dec 2015
Question: I am 50 years old having long history of low back pain (now under control). Last year, I was diagonased with Low Vitamin D3 level 4.3 and B12 level 110 by an ortho doctor. I used to take vitamin tablets, injections (b12) for these deficiencies. In the mean time, I used to feel unbearable leg pain (lower part of the leg part including feet) in both my legs for the past 6 months. I face difficulty in walking and feeling weakness in my legs. My weight is 54 kgs. 10 days back, i went to a general physician for consultation. He asked me to take fresh test for B12 level. I was shocked to see the level of b12 is > 2000. But the doctor said nothing to worry and asked to me to take tablets Renerve Plus and Ubicar. In addition b12 injection once in a week. I am taking these medicines for the last 10 days. Severeity of my leg pain is reduced. I want to know whether B12 level >2000 is conducive for health, any harmful effect associated with it and side effects of medicines I am taking. Further, any long time solution to my problem. Kindly advice me.

I am XXXXXXX K ( YYYY@YYYY ). I am taking vitamin b12 injections and tablets from December 2014 to October 2015 (11 months) under ortho doctor guidance. During the first week of November 2015, I consulted another general physician(MD) due to continued severe leg/feet pain (from below knee to feet) and he asked me to do the blood test to know the latest b12 level. Current test report said that my b12 level is > 2000. But the doctor (general physician) convinced me not to worry about that. He asked me to continue medicines prescribed by him for 1 month and come again. (prescribed tablets by him : 1. Renerve plus 2. Ubicar and b12 injection once in a week for 4 weeks). If you need any further details and clarifications, I am ready to give. I am expecting your reply at the earliest.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Vitamin D levels?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing details.

In a broad sense, Vitamin B12 is not known to be toxic,if if levels are higher. You should continue monthly injections(once you complete the course of -weekly for 4 weeks) and daily tablet.

However, low vitamin D levels could have a major contribution in your legs pain. What are your current calcium and vitamin D levels? You should get them checked. Are you taking vitamin D and calcium as well?
