Question: My 13 year old granddaughter has started having panic/anxiety. She was seen at the hospital and they gave her a low dose of adavant(?), but she had 3 episodes at school today of crying and just had another one at dinner. She doesn't know why she can't stop crying. Help

Brief Answer:
Needs evaluation by pediatrician and psychiatrist

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern for your granddaughter.

At age of 13 there is likely no cardiac or respiratory cause for anxiety/panic symptoms. But still I suggest to consult pediatrician for proper physical examination and required invetigation for her problem if yet not consulted. If by chance some physical cause found , treatment can be done accordingly.
However if no reason found out and even she can not describe any physical cause for her problem , consuting a psychiatrist is the approach.

Likely psychological causes of such problem can be:

Some problem at school , related to study or may be any harassment or misbehaviour by someone.

Some problem at home, either some social stress or abused by someone.

She may have some fear which she can not describe in words and experssing it in anxiety.

Psychiatrist has skill to evaluate such cases and find out the proper cause through detail history. After seraching the cause , solution of the same can be made and she may not need medicines. However if she has some stress, she can be given low dose anti anxiety for short period.

I can not get what is there in adavant, please specify the content.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have more queries, you are always welcome. Just revert back to me with some more details regarding her childhood, family, education , medical history as well as points you feel importnat to tell from above information.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
