Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for choosing health care magic for your query!
Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is characterized by episodes of fast heart rate. PSVT is a fairly common type of irregular heartbeat with heart rate more then 150/minute.PSVT is term used for normal tachycardia ,in which the heart rate is greater then 150/minute and can be as high as upto 250 beats/min.The heart’s sinus node, which sends electrical signals to tell the heart muscle when to contract short circuits. This causes the heart to beat more frequently than normal.MOst of the people respond well to medical management,Usually Diltiazem or Verapamil is indicated for medical management of patient.However in emergency intravenous shots of Adenosine are given which immediately terminates a attack.Most of the times PSVT is not a life threatening condition,However if attack becomes frequent and begin to interfere in daily life,Then Electro physiological studies are conducted by a interventional electrophysiologist and foci causing abnormal beats is ablated by using radiofrequency.
But ablative procedures should be done only when attacks are very frequent,otherwise patient responds well to medical conservative management.
The following increase your risk for PSVT hence avoid them;
Alcohol use(Binge drinking),Caffeine use and smoking.
