Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank for your query, albeit short and specific.
To recapitulate: Female/71 - visited a Doctor - says IBS and sending for Ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis - wants to know the causes of peri? abdominal pain and Irritable bowel syndrome...

I would have liked to know your symptoms, please share all the symptoms that you have.
Pain in abdomen can have so many reasons that are difficult to list up unless until you give me your symptoms.
The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is caused by the following:
- Stress and/or anxiety is the cause of irritable bowel syndrome.
- Some foods and beverages can precipitate the symptoms of IBS which can be varied such as:
Pain in abdomen
Needs to go for passing bowel movements all of a sudden on stress or on anxiety or after certain foods. There can be periods where one can have no symptoms and the moment they are instigated by a particular cause as mentioned, the symptoms can continue for some days or weeks depending upon the instigating factor.
Bloating
Loose stools or hard stool with constipation.
Feeling of incomplete evacuation - one feels like he/she has not completely passed the stools and needs to go again to get no stool.
The basics of diagnosis of IBS is that all the relevant tests of stool, blood, urine, colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen are absolutely within normal limits.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
