What Causes Persistent Abdominal Bloating And Tiredness?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Aug 2017
Question: Hi, I know this probably sounds like a silly thing but I am travelling for work so cannot see my GP for another couple of weeks and it is starting to worry me. I have been well and healthy for the past few years, no symptoms of anything, a few months ago I started taking 20mg fluoxetine daily, but no side effects and take no other medications. About 3 weeks ago, I discovered I was getting persistently fatigued (whilst no change in activity or stress level, or a change in diet) and could sleep for 12 hours at a stretch rather than my usual 7-8. A couple of weeks later (about 10 days ago) I discovered that when I wake up in the morning, my stomach is normal, but within an hour of being awake (even if I haven't eaten anything) I am bloated with a severely distended abdomen (similar to the bloating I get at menstruation) but it doesn't go away. It doesn't hurt, I don't have cramp, just feel uncomfortable and so swollen and as the day wears on it gets worse. I have tried OTC anti-gas tablets in case it was that but nothing changed and I'm not feeling so uncomfortable. I don't appear to have gained or lost any weight, or have any other symptoms at all but the bloating won't go away. Should I be worried, and if not, what can you suggest to stop this happening? I'm not sure if that and the tiredness are linked but thought I would give you all the details! (also no blood in stool or urine, no constipation or diarrhoea)

Brief Answer:
It seems to be due to gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that your symptoms might be due to gastritis.
I would advise that you can take Omeprazole 20 mg along with Domperidone 10 mg and a probiotic preparation. A digestive enzyme preparation after meals will have added benefits.
Avoid spicy and oily foods. Drink lots of water daily.
A clinical evaluation by your Gastroenterologist along with an Endoscopy will help in planning further medical management.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Regards. Thanks.

Hi

Thank you so much for your response. As I am travelling and unable to see my local doctor- are the two medicines you prescribed OTC or do I need a prescription for them?

Many thanks XXXXXXX
