Question: My husband is 60 years old and working grave yard. He cannot utter a complete sentence without burping. He is complaining about constipation as well. He cannot hold his food down period. Please advise. I am a nervous wreck and will be taking him to the Emergency Room. We have tried tums, prolasec (you name it) all the way to baking soda. Thank you for your time

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I understand your concern and would like o explain that persistent burping could be related to different disorders like:

- indigestion (also called dyspepsia)
- gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD) and hiatal hernia
- anxiety (which is often associated with air swallowing).

Chronic constipation could exacerbate this situation.

I would recommend performing a fibrogastroscopy to exclude GERD or hiatal hernia.

Some tips to reduce burping would be:

- Eat and drink slowly. Taking your time can help you swallow less air.
- Avoid carbonated drinks and beer. They release carbon dioxide gas.
- Skip the gum and hard candy. When we chew gum or suck on hard candy, we swallow more often than normal. Part of what we're swallowing is air.
- Avoid smoking. When inhaling smoke, we also inhale and swallow air.
- Check the dentures. Poorly fitting dentures can cause swallowing excess air when eating and drinking.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
