What Causes Persistent Chest Congestion Despite Taking Medication?
Question: I have had chest congestion for a week, started using sudafed and then switched to mucinex when the chest congestion got thick. I used up the ~2day supply of mucinex but still have congestion though it is less. Is it ok to continue with mucinex, or should I go to a clinic for a prescription medication?
Brief Answer:
You can continue with mucinex.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You can definitely continue mucinex. It is having n acetyl cysteine (NAC).
It is anti oxidant, mucolytic and expectorant.
So no harm in continuing it.
If you are not improving even after 7 days of NAC then consult doctor and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and Chest x ray to rule out lung infection.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
You can continue with mucinex.

I am improved with the use of the NAC, the congestion is less, and the sore throat is gone, but after how many days of not returning to normal should I consider this to be chronic and go visit a doctor? My nose is irritated and bloody when I blow it, which I attribute to the extended use of the NAC and the climate.
Brief Answer:
If not improving after 7 days of NAC, consult doctor.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Take NAC for total seven days.
If not improving after 7 days then consult doctor.
And no need to worry for NAC extended use. It is safe and can not cause nose bleeding.
