What Causes Persistent Cough And Cold When Diagnosed With Adenoiditis?
Some adenoid enlargement is common in all children.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Adenoid enlargement is normal in all children between the ages of 3 to 7 years.
2. Initial treatment is medical and depends upon the symptoms.
3. A course of anti-allergic, mucolytic medications, initially with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, cough mixtures if the cold and cough is severe is given. After the acute episode settles down, steroid nasal sprays, steam inhalation and saline nasal washes help control the adenoid hypertrophy.
4. Severely enlarged adenoids causing mouth breathing, snoring and failure to thrive (adenoid facies), not responding to long term medical treatment can be treated surgically. Coblation is a newer technique.
5. Upload an image of the X-ray rather than the report.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
Thanks for your reply, i have uploaded the x-ray copy. Please review and let me know your suggestion.
Thanks in advance.
This should settle down with medication.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. There is adenoid enlargement in the image but there is an air column in front of the adenoid.
2. Thus should settle down with medication as suggested.
3. Kindly get an x ray done after 2 to 3 months for comparison. Treatment must be sustained and tapered off over 2 to 3 months.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Thanks for your reply.
When we consult the local doctor in XXXXXXX ENT hospital, they said we have to go for surgery as because having Adenoids are no use and are in enlarged. Also they said currently daughter is breathing through mouth(open mouth) not with nose which will cause other infections and problems with growth and also nose and face shape may change further, This is not good for a girl.
Please suggest whether we should go for medication or surgery.
Is there any side effects if we go for surgery and will the problem gets cured completely.
Thanks in advance.
There is no need to rush into surgery.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. There is no need to rush into surgery. Almost all children at this age will have a similar X-ray. Go by the symptoms, distress and not only by the X-ray images.
2. Only if her symptoms persist after 6-8 weeks of sustained medical treatment should you consider surgical intervention.
3. She seems to have an adequate nasal airway in the X-ray image. She will respond to medical treatment.
4. This is just the beginning of adenoid enlargement that normally lasts for a few years before regressing after the age of 8-12 years. Adenoid tissue disappears by the age of 15 years.
5. Surgery is only required if the symptoms appear as explained. Surgery is normally without any long term side effects. If the adenoids are removed under vision, the problem gets cured completely. Remember that the face is growing and hence children can have other reasons for nasal obstruction. A quick video nasal endoscopy can help.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
