What Causes Persistent Coughing Up Of Phlegm?
Question: I have been coughing up phlegm from my upper chest / throat for about 2 months. I have been prescribed several z-pacs and other anti-biotics, but the phlegm continues. Am starting to think it may be something more serious than an upper gi infection.

Thank you Dr. Bhavsar. I do not have breathlessness on exertion. I probably cough up the phlegm 7 to 8 times per day. The phlegm seems pretty clear, not yellowish.

Brief Answer:
Get done chest X ray to rule out lung infection.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should definitely pulmonologist and get done
1. Chest X ray to rule out lung infection.
2. PFT (pulmonary function test) to rule out bronchitis.
You are taking antihistamine (Loratidine) and anti reflux drugs. And you are still not improving. So we should definitely rule out lung infection and bronchitis.
So please consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
You may need inhaled bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
