Question: Hi,

My son is 9 months old and he is been suffering from diarrhoea for two weeks now. We have give been giving him Diarolyte and lactose free milk and consulted with the health visitor at NHS who assured us that we were doing the right thing by keeping him hydrated.

We are a bit worried as he is pooing 5-7 times a day. However, there is no change in his attentiveness and play habits. Can you please help.

Brief Answer:
Diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Diarrhea is a common problem in this age range. From the time of onset, there is no telling how long it will last. Often it is due to a disruption in the lining of the stomach. This can occur as a result of a virus, or some other mild digestive issue. In any case, once problem itself is resolved, it can take up to several weeks for the lining of the stomach to repair itself. This is why you see continued diarrhea. As long as there is no fever, and the babies behavior is otherwise normal, there is nothing to worry about.
