What Causes Persistent Leukocytes And Blood In Urine?

Question: Hi, what could cause persistent leucocytes in urine, sometimes blood on dipstick.ive got a bloated abdomen and backpain, pressure to urinate when standing up.ive had 4 lots of antibiotics even though cultures have been negative. Only thing cultures have shown is increased red blood cells. Thanks

Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
If you have leukocytes and RBS in urine with classical symptoms of UTI that is Urinary Tract Infection,this means you have UTI.
Culture negative UTI can be because of previous antibiotic use.
In such scenario I advise to first of all get Ultrasound Kidney And Urinary Bladder to see for any stones or hydronephrosis (that is back pressure on Kidney), to see for any pus collection.
Again give a sample for :
1. Urine Culture.
2. Urine for TB PCR
3. Urine for AFB.
4. Kidney Function Test
5. Urind Fungal stain and culture
After giving the sample start on antibiotic like Nitrofurantoin.
Once the reports are available get back to me.

Ive had nitrofurantoin but it hasnt worked. Does this mean i may need intravenous antibiotics if the gp still thinks its a uti?

I also feel that it's UTI.
IV antibiotics are not essential.
First of all get investigations as suggested. I am hopeful we will be able to reach some conclusion by these investigations.
