default
Posted on Fri, 24 Apr 2015
Question: I have been having mid calf shin pain going on 10 weeks. Hurts when pressed and on walking. When I am laying down there is no pain, but on rising in am as soon as I start walking there is pain. Advil 200 to 800 mg usually does the trick. Have been to orthopedist. Took xray. No sign of stress fracture. What could this be? Pain is only on left inner shin bone.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to muscle sprain or tear.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mid calf shin pain that aggravates on standing and walking can be due to -

1. Calf muscle strain and tear - Usually due to overwork and overstretching of the muscles. Recent increase in leg exercises may cause these. Gradual increase in exercise and pain killers with mild anti inflammatory drugs can help in reducing the symptoms.

2. Prolonged intake of hormonal therapy like oral pills or HRT might cause this.

3. Muscle ischaemia- associated with diabetes usually. There is acute pain associated with it.

4. Deep vein thrombosis- comes last among the list of probable diagnosis.

You may get the initial physical examination, relevant tests and treatment done under care of 'Orthopaedician'.

I hope this answers your query.

Not diabetic, not a runner, not on hormone therapy. Pain came on suddenly and is only on left shin. My concern is that it does not go away. It is more of a bone pain, not soft tissue. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to Vitamin D3 or calcium deficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If it is more of a bone pain then it can be due to decrease in Vitamin D3 or calcium levels. It is best to get these levels evaluated and start with proper supplements.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Muscle sprain likely.

Detailed Answer:
If these two were normal then a muscle sprain or shin splints is the most likely cause of the pain.
