What Causes Persistent Salty Taste In The Mouth?

Question: Hi,
Over the past two weeks everything I eat/drink tastes salty. I had not changed to any high salt foods or suffered from dehydration (which seemed the most obvious cause). I am only prescribed Lipitor, but I do take constant amounts of cold and flu tablets (it's our Winter). I thought perhaps I might have overdone these tablets.
However, going through the literature on the Internet, one possible cause jumps out at me. I came back from Fiji three weeks ago and of course I loaded up on duty free cigars. I haven't smoked cigars for three years (never smoked cigarettes) so it's a bit too much coincidence that the salty taste in everything began when I started smoking cigars again. I see that smoking can cause the saliva glands to become infected. Agree this is the most likely cause? If so, what do I do about infected saliva glands?
Cheers, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Stop smoking cigars
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
You have been experiencing a salty taste to all your foods after smoking cigars. It is not likely that you have an infection but you have a taste change just because of the cigars themselves. Your body will return to normal within a week after stopping cigars. If you still have this salty taste I recommend seeing your doctor for more involved testing and examination.
I hope I answered your question. Please contact HCM with your additional concerns and questions.
