What Causes Pink Eye?
Question: How can i tell what type of pink eye i have
Brief Answer:
usually not tested for type
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
When we see patients with pink eye the most common causes are viral or bacterial.
Viral is more common but we ususally just give patients antibiotic eye drops to cover it in case it is bacterial.
If it is itchy and there is pus you probably need antibiotic eye drops. If it is just red and not too itchy it could even be from allergies.
It is possible for a doctor to culture the fluid from the eyes but it is not usually done. We usually go by symptoms and just treat for allergies or infection.
Cool compresses often help but do not use ice on the eyes. Saline eye drops may also help relieve symptoms.
