What Causes Pink Urine?

Question: My mother just called me in a panic, She has been taking the medication 1 week, after a complicated hysterectomy, She developed a post surgical hematomia , ( that was drained) released from the hospital 7 days ago......during routine tests they found a very small pe, she has a past histery of Atrial Fib and hence decision to be placed on Xeralto going home versus the heperain and coumidin in hospital setting.
This evening she first was alarmed at pink urine, and now amber/brown. She lives alone, my sister h\who is a nurse is away at medical conference, Because it is after hours, she called her recommended triage support team , and they said go to the ER. Opinion?

Hello!
Welcome and thank you for asking on HealthcareMagic!
Regarding your concern, I would explain that these changes in urine color could be related to bleeding in the urinary bladder.
Is she still taking Xarelto? Blood thinners are known to cause such adverse effects.
On the other hand, a urinary tract infection can not be excluded either.
For this reason, I agree with her doctor that the best thing to do is to go to the ER for a physical exam and some tests ( complete blood count, a urine analysis, an abdominal ultrasound).
Hope you will find this answer helpful! Let me know if I can assist you further.
