What Causes Pink Vaginal Spotting And Pulling Sensation From Belly Button?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Aug 2014
Question: I am 42, started my menstrual cycle on XXXXXXX 10th and normally last 5 to 6 days. I have been spotting since. I only see pink after I urinate on the wipe. There is no pain or burning. However, today I have been feeling a strong pull from inside my bellybutton. It feels like a string attached to my bellybutton being pulled through my vagina. It is very strange. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Need some information from you ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help.

A pinkish discharge is at times considered normal caused by a hormonal change which is what occurs during the period; but at times it can be an indication of a few conditions like infections (urinary tract infections), use of contraceptives, pregnancy, etc.

As the only other symptom you have along with a pinkish discharge, your symptoms are considered vague.

But I would like to ask you a few questions if you do not mind ma'am:
-Did you have your normal period (flow, duration, etc.) for the 5-6 days after the 10th of June? If so, and you have been spotting after this duration, then this is most probably a hormonal imbalance.
-Are you on any form of contraception?
-Are you sexually active? If yes, then when was your last sexual encounter?

I look forward to your kind response to further assist you ma'am. Do not worry, we shall find the cause for your presentation if at all it is abnormal.

Best wishes ma'am.

I sent another response to the doctor and I don't see it. I will re-send. Please see below:

Yes, my last period XXXXXXX 10th, was normal. I had intercourse with my husband right after my period, around the 17th, then I noticed the spotting continued. Now it has been almost 3 weeks of very light pink spotting. We are not using contraceptive. I am hoping it is not pre-menopause. We were planning on trying to start a family quite soon due to my age. Hopefully it is not too late.

Brief Answer:
3 weeks of spotting will require attention

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

As your spotting has occurred for almost 3 weeks now, we will certainly have to address to at the earliest. Your concern does hold some weight as perimenopause does result in a change in the menstrual cycle, and taking your age into consideration this will also have to be ruled out. But I would advice you to visit your doctor at the earliest convenience as we will have to make a diagnosis at the earliest.

I shall list all the possible causes out for you, so you can bring them up with your doctor and gradually rule out the unlikely ones and narrow down the search for the cause in your case ma'am. They are:
-Contraception (has been ruled out)
-Pregnancy (unlikely, but still needs to be ruled out)
-Medications (eg. steroids, anti-depressants, blood-thinning medication)
-Infections
-Vaginal irritation due to dryness
-Hormonal imbalance and conditions causing it (eg. polycystic ovaries)
-Thyroid abnormalities
-Diabetes
-Endometrial abnormalities
-Approaching menopause
-Cancer (rare)

Please visit your doctor and request for an elaborate examination ma'am, including hormone levels, ultrasound examination of the pelvis, pap smear, physical examination and a speculum examination if required.

I hope and pray all goes well, and the cause for your presentation is nothing serious so you can soon conceive and have a beautiful family ma'am. Please do visit a doctor as an online consultation will not suffice in your case. And please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always available to help.

Best wishes.
