What Causes Popping Sensation In The Ball Of The Foot?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Dec 2016
Question: Hello,

I have a problem with my right foot, I used to run before this problem occured, first I experienced it few months ago after I came home from running one day, I felt weird pain in the ball of my right foot, so I stopped running for some time and it went back to normal. Now, few days ago I was walking home from the gym and I felt this pain that felt like a bee stung me, at first I thought it was actually some kind of insect that crawled into my shoe and did this, but when I came home and checked it was actually my right foot again, this time it was more serious than before, there is this thing that I can touch and feel it, it's like popped vein or something in the ball of my right foot, right under my 4th toe, and I can press it and it would go back into my foot but when I move my finger it would pop out again, now when I walk this popping in and out thing is causing me pain (popping in specifically), and I don't know what's causing it, I did some Google search and found out that it's most similar to Metatarsalgia and Morton's Neuroma, but I'm not actually 100% sure about any of those 2 since I find myself relating to only a few of named symptoms. Do you know what could be the problem here and is it anything serious that requires surgery ?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Can be a dislocated joint or soft tissue mass.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A sensation of popping in and out in the ball of the foot can be due to a dislocated joint in the foot or a soft tissue mass. This can be diagnosed after a direct examination and an X-ray of the area. Proper treatment can be suggested only after the investigations. There can be an inflammation of the joint also- metatarsalgia but it is less likely to give a popping feeling.
I hope this answers your query.

What should I try at home to let it heal in case it's dislocated joint, I would love to try and let it go back to normal and in case that fails, I will go for an x-ray, should I just rest for a few days or do something else ?

Also I forgot to add, that there is no deformity on my foot when looking at it, everything is normal, but I can feel that something is popping and and out when I touch the area with my fingers and sometimes when I'm walking (It doesn't pop in and out for every step I make, just sometimes, I can walk normally and run, but when it happens, it's sharp pain that goes away in a matter of 2-3 seconds).

Brief Answer:
Can be ligament injury also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Intermittent popping with extreme pain can be due to a ligament injury also. You need to give it a rest and avoid any movement that aggravates the pain and popping. If the area feels better then it is ligament injury otherwise dislocation needs to be ruled out by X-ray.
Hope my answer is helpful.
