What Causes Positive Widal Test Result?
Question: Dear Doctor,
First of all, my thank you to all Doctors here for providing great online help. I am from XXXXXXX I got typhoid (widal Test O 1:160, H 1:160, platelet count: 92000). I underwent 5 days treatment of antibiotics (Levofloxacin 500 mg 1/day, Cefuoroxime 500mg 2/day) along with other tabs. In 2 days platelets went upto 2.5 lakh. After 5 days, I asked Doctor , I will continue my treatment further so as not to end up re occurrence of typhoid later. My Doctor told, it is enough, no need further treatment. However, Out of my own self caring, I got widal test re done after a week, it was >>O 1: 160, H1:80. Bit happy for improvement. After a month again got widal test done but still it is O 1: 160, H1:80. I was unhappy to see this. One good thing plateletes went upto 3 lakhs. I am now worrying, whether, I need to get further treatment or wait more time. Please advise. what happen if I continue my First course for another 5 dyas.

Brief Answer:
No need to start treatment if no fever is there.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for posting your query.
Widal test can remain positive for upto 2-3 months after the initial infection. So there was no need to check whether typhoid was cured or not .
So a persisting positive valve for widal test in absence of any fever or loose motions doesn't indicate a new or persistent typhoid fever. It just indicates past infection ( within 1-3 months )
So no need to start any treatment if there is no fever or loose motions.
Any clarification feel free to ask.
Happy to answer.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
5-7 days most of the times .
Detailed Answer:
HI XXXXXXX
Most of the times with proper antibiotic therapy the bacteria will stay for 5-7 days.
But some times very rarely the bacteria may sit in the gall bladder and it can stay for years . But this is rare .
You are maintaining good precautions and hygiene . Continue that , also make sure the drinking water is boiled hot and then cooled . With this much precaution the chances of contamination from you is almost nil .
