What Causes Post Nasal Drip And Whooping Cough?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Apr 2017
Question: I have had a persistent cough since January 2017. Went to see a doctor in February. My sinuses were never congested and i thought a slight post nasal drip was irritating my throat. He thought perhaps I had experienced whooping cough. He gave me a Z- Pack of antibiotics, cough syrup. While my general health improved, every few days the cough returns. Now I experience a tightening of my throat. I am feeling fatigued more and more and nauseated. Some times I run a fever at night with chills. Lately, I am experiencing a whooshing sensation in my head. I check my blood pressure regularly since I take medicine for high blood pressure. My blood pressure readings are normal. At times my eyes burn and I have a runny nose. I live in Alaska so that rules out alleges to pollen etc. I am at my wits end. I want to feel healthy again.

Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query
As you are having post nasal drip and nasal congestion, the cough is probably due to a deviation in nasal septum. Please get a x-ray paranasal sinuses done and send me the reports.
Start taking an oral decongestants and nasal spray twice daily for few days.
Take steam inhalation and hexidine gargles.
Take a cough suppressant for 5 days.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks and regards

Dr. XXXXXXX Aggaral,

Not really. I do not have nasal congestion and do not have a deviated septum. Decades ago when I was having repeated sinus infections that was looked into by my doctor. I have not injured my nose in the intervening years.

Thanks,

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the information.
If the cause of cough is not nasal than it is due to pulmonary cause or gastric cause. You should get a chest x-ray done and a throat swab for culture sensitivity done.
You should take an antacid once daily for few days.
Avoid smoking and any spicy foods.
Take steam inhalation.
Sir cough can be a side effect of a hypertensive medicine. Please tell me what medicines are you taking for high blood pressure.
Take care
Thanks and regards
