What Causes Pressure And Blurriness In Right Eye?

Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: I was looking up an eye issue. Yesterday and today I have been experiencing pressure and blurriness in my right eye. It seems to come on for about 2 minutes and then goes away. I notice it when I stand up and walk around. Could it be high blood pressure related?

Brief Answer:
Glaucoma, pituitary adenoma

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be helping you with your query today.

Would you please clarify a few things for me please?
1)Do you have hypertension, diabetes, thyroid problems, heart disease?
2)Do you have any eye refractive errors? do you wear prescription glasses?
3)are you on any medications?
4) have you had any headaches which increase in intensity or persist longer than usual?
5) Are your eye symptoms associated with headache, breathing difficulty, palpitations, giddiness or sweating?
6) The pressure sensation you have -Is is throbbing (in synchronization with your heart beat). You can check it by feeling for your pulse on the inside of your wrist below the thumb when you have the symptoms. It may match the pulsations felt .
7) do the symptoms go away only when you sit down or it goes away in 2 minutes anyway. does it occur after you have sitting for a long while or even if you sit for just a minute? any pain in the eye
8) any recent injuries/infections or prior surgeries to the right eye or any head trauma?

I would like to primarily rule out glaucoma, pituitary adenomas.

If I consulted a person with your symptoms, I would
-initially do a quick exam of the eye, head, cardiovascular and neurological exam.
- request for eye pressure and refractive errors measurement, if any.
- try to elicit the similar (to your symptoms) response in my clinic and monitor your blood pressure, eyesight & balance.
- A CT scan of the brain, an Electrocardiogram and an echocardiogram will be included in the work up along with basic blood investigations (complete blood count, Lipid profile, thyroid profile, prolactin levels, renal and liver functions tests)

Depending on these I would decide on an appropriate treatment plan.

To answer your query- It could be blood pressure related . However this usually occurs bilaterally unless there is a structural change in the blood supply of the right eye. High blood pressure could trigger an indirect effect by increasing an already increased local pressure.

I recommend you see a physician/ophthalmologist/neurologist (may be needed) team asap
If you feel any pain, loss of peripheral ( to the side) vision, sever headache, vomiting, persistent blurring , redness in the eye(even without pain) see your doctor right away or visit the ER to rule out severe glaucoma, retinal detachment.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I could help you with.

Brief Answer:
Eye doctor first

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up.

Fenofibrate (tricor) may cause blurred vision(1%). It is, however, unlikely if you have been taking it for a while now and will usually affect both eyes.

I suggest seeing an ophthalmologist first (an ENT-otorhinolaryngologist too, if indicated by the opthalmologist).
To be checked:
- Eye pressure,
- refractive errors
- eye movement disorders (lazy eye, nystagmus especially when there is change in body position- this may need an additional ENT consult).
- retinal, lens pathology

If everything is negative, a consult with your treating GP will be necessary.

Hope I've helped.

Wish you good health.
