What Causes Pressure And Pain In The Chest While Breathing?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: I have GERD and several heart issues. The heart issues are: afib which has been for the most part, almost completely corrected by an ablation procedure 3 years ago and with the following medications, Tikosyn, Metoprolol 100 twice a day, and the blood pressure has been under control by the additional Amlopien-Benazeprol 10-40. I am currently feeling pressure straight up and down my sternum and when it gets to the top of my chest it goes right and left towards both of my shoulders. I feel more pressure and pain when I take a deep breath.
I have been taking antacids for the afternoon, which has not made the symptoms go away.
I am a male 5'6" tall 185 lbs and 63 years old.

The pressure feeling actually goes up to my ears.

Brief Answer:
EKG, Echo and upper GI work up needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, with all your cardiac history and current symptoms unless fresh EKG isn't repeated, and cardiac enzymes alongwith serum electrolytes, it's difficult to rule out any cardiac cause for your symptoms. If needed a repeat fresh echo cardiogram is also important alongwith a detailed cardiac examination.

Once cardiac cause is ruled out, a fresh chest Xray and then If needed barium swallow can be asked for if dicussed properly with a gastroentrologist to look for any mass lesion or hiatal hernia. If needed upper GI endoscopy may also be needed.

Meanwhile using motility agents like domperidone alongwith antacids like omeperazole or pantoprazole before meals can be of help. Analgesics like acetaminophen can be used for pain and has no gastric side effects. Avoid heavy, greasy meals and fizzy drinks.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
