Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2015
Question: I have had the feeling of a ball like pressure in the middle of my abdomen for a year. It rarely goes away and does not seem to be affected by bowel movements. It makes bicycling difficult. As I feel pregnant, but I'm not. Lately, I've had a feeling of throat fullness when I eat and even after I've eaten and for hours later. I'm not overweight, I exercise regularly and am really worried about what might be wrong. I have no medical problems.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to gastroesophageal reflux

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

Going by description of your symptoms the cause is likely to be upper gastrointestinal tract dypepsia with possibly gastroesophageal reflux. Following could be the predisposing factors

1. Decreased intake of water

2. Decreased intake of fiber in diet

3. Decreased gastric motility leading to delayed emptying of stomach and leading to feeling of bloating and fullness. It also predisposes to reflux leading to throat symptoms

4. High body mass index

5. Lack of physical activity and exercise

6. Consumption of caffienated/alcoholic/carbonated beverages

I would suggest the following trial of conservative management before going for Upper gastrointestinal tract Endoscopy

1. Ensure intake of meals at right time. Eat small quantity of meals frequently
Avoid sleeping immediately after consuming meals

2. Combination of acid suppressant like Pantoprozole along with gastric motility increasing drug like Domperidone will be helpful.

3. Avoid Caffienated/alcohol/carbonated beverages

4. Consume plenty of oral fluids

5. High fibre diet: 2 servings of vegetable salad and 2 servings of fruits especially citrus fruits will ensure adequate intake of fibre in diet

If the symptoms still persist even after 2 weeks of following this, you will require further evaluation by your Physician and also gastrocopy.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
