What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: I am having prolonged menstrual cycles lasting up to ten days with very heavy bleeding and excruciating cramps and really bad bloating. I am a 45 year old mother of three and my youngest child is 23. I have been having these issues for over a year now and I thought they would just go away but they haven't. I went from a 3 day cycle - 5 day and now I don't know when it's gonna stop yet it will start right back within a week's time. Are there any concerns?
Brief Answer:
I suggest you see your OBGYN!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.
I have reviewed this information and am so sorry to hear about these changes and all the inconveniences this must have caused you. This is certainly a concern at your age and we cannot allow this and hope on spontaneous resolution. With more than a year's duration and at your age, there is enough reason to get evaluated by an OBGYN. There are several different possible explanations to this but I wouldn't want us to keep guessing but really want that we get a comprehensive evaluation and investigations.
Keep me posted on what the findings are. Also, feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

I unfortunately don't have health insurance currently, is there any real cause for concern or is just a matter of getting checked out more thoroughly than my yearly exam (which I had in July).
Brief Answer:
Yes, you need a focused OBGYN exam!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up query.
This is certainly a specific aspect and needs dedicated time and efforts. I understand you may not have insurance but I will say plan and get this sorted. Otherwise, you will need at some point to rush and make emergency arrangements that might be more demanding.
Please, consider getting evaluated as health is of primary importance.
