What Causes Prolonged Uterine Bleeding?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jan 2017
Question: For the past few periods, I have had very very light brown spotting following my period. My period is lighter on day 1 and 2, heavier on 3 and 4 then slowly tapers off for a week following. After day 6 or so, there is only very light brown spotting after a bowel movement or something . Is this a cause for concern? I am on birth control but never really had this issue before. Could diet, lack of water, or lack of exercise be a reason for it moving so slowly?

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Since you have bleeding for only 6 days, I feel its quiet normal.. While on contraceptive pills its normal to have lesser bleeding..

Do you have prolonged spotting ? If you do, then you need to get evaluated. Please get an ultrasound abdomen and pelvis and pelvic examination done after discussing with your doc to rule out cervical polyp. Scan helps to rule out any uterine problems. Also get a Hb and TSH to rule out anemia and hypothyroidism as a cause of decreased bleeding.

Diet, water and lack of exercise also contributes to this problem but those above things have to be ruled out before getting into any conclusion.

Hope I have answered your query..

I have about a 6 day period on bc. I just have had brown on the toilet paper (maybe once a day) for a few days after. It does get less and less each day. it seems like my period just takes longer to get every last bit out.
