What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Spotting With Abdominal Cramps?

Question: I have been spotting blood for about 3 almost 4 weeks now. It started out bright red in color and has gradually moved to a dark reddish brown color. I occasionally feel some cramps in my right side, this doesn't happen very often. on the 25th and 26th of XXXXXXX I bleed very heavily and then it quit, it is now July 24th. My periods have always been very irregular, could this just be a period?

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,
Now, I need to understand your problems further:
you say to have your last periods starting on 25th of XXXXXXX
while you've been spotting for almost 3 or 4 weeks now.
Let me understand: from 25th of XXXXXXX did you have spotting or the spotting just started these days?
If they just started recently (during last days), then, most probably, they are signs of your period.
Take mephenamic acid for the cramps; apply warm clothing on your tummy and drink plenty of fluids.
Looking forward to have the requested data in!

in XXXXXXX I bled heavily for 2 days (25th and 26th) after that it quit and I did not have any signs of a period. on July 2nd I began to spot blood and since then I have spotted a dark brown/red substance. I should add I took a HPT and that came back negitive. I have always had irregular periods but nothing like this.
Brief Answer:
Genital infection or other problem to be further investigated...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Thank you for providing additional information.
From your new data, my thoughts go for possible:
- genital infection that has gone untreated
- any other genital problem
A further abdominal/transvaginal ultrasound is recommended to evaluate your genital tract (including ovaries, uterus, vagina) and a physical examination by OG specialist is also advised to look for possible vaginal/cervical changes.
A PAP test can be done to rule out abnormal growth in cervix together with a total hormonal balance.
After evaluating the results of such tests we can conclude the final diagnosis.
My opinion is that you might have genital infection that can be detected through a simple vaginal swab testing and abdominal/transvaginal ultrasound.
Hope it was of help!
