What Causes Radiating Pain In Shoulder, Upper Arm And Neck Post A Mastectomy?
Question: I'm a 72-year old female with a mastectomy, right side, no lump node involvement. I've developed severe right shoulder and upper arm pain but there is NO loss of mobility, NO increased pain with mobility and no tenderness when pressing the shoulder. Pain is worse at night even laying on my left side. Not frozen shoulder (can move arm freely). No arthritis. But pain in shoulder and upper arm often radiates down the arm and up through my neck. Pain has intensified over the last two weeks and is now very severe. some arm weakness.

Based upon the history provided it appear to be musculoskeletal pain. There is need to get the x ray of the affected shoulder joint to look for any pathology. Sharp pain with weakness in hand do point towards the cervical disc problem. In that case MRI of the cervical spine along with shoulder should joint be done. It will clearly delineate the soft tissue pathology.
There is need to increase the dose of painkiller. Apart from it, physiotherapy would be helpful.
Stay calm and add another painkiller with acetaminophen . tab. Tramal plus (tramadol + acetaminophen) would be adequate to deal with the pain.
