What Causes Radiation Proctitis After Treatment For Prostate Cancer With Radiation?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: In 2013 I was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer with radiation . Six to seven months later (Jan 2014), I began experiencing lower GI problems and was told I had Radiation Proctitis . What % of radiation patients get this condition? Is this normal ? or was something wrong with the treatment (IMRT?) ? What are the best treatments for this condition? What are the chances that it will go away after a time and /or treatment?
Thanks XXXX

Brief Answer:
Normal to get radiation proctitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history and feel sorry for the situation you are in.

It is normal to get radiation proctitis after treating your prostate cancer with radiation. It is not related to something going wrong with the treatment, but it is a side effect of the radiation therapy.

The treatment strategy is depending on the symptoms of the patients and severity of damages caused to the intestines.

By passing of the time, edema will be reversed, improving the symptoms.

Hope it answered to your queries! Let me know if you need further clarifications!
