What Causes Raised ESR Levels?
Question: Hello doctor,
My wife is 34 years old. 1.6 years ago she had her gall bladder removed. After that she has been fine most of the times with occasional upset stomach.Last week she had upset stomach with abdominal pain and diarrhoea but homeopath took care. This week she is suffering frm cold, cough, throat pain and occasional pain in right eye cage and head. I got her complete check up today. Her cholestrol was ser. Cholestrol 180, serum trigly.119, ser. HDL 42, LDL 114, VLDL 23.7 MG.%. Urine and electrolyte report is normal. Her fasting sugar is 84, blood urea 30, s.creatinine 0.86, SGOT 35.6 IU/L, SGPT 33, S.BILRUBIN 0.85, URIC ACID 4.8, all normal. Her HGB is 11.4, RBC 4.58, Wbc 6, PLATELETS 155. Differential count is also in normal limit. Why is her ESR showing 80MM/1st Hr. ? How to treat this condition ?

1. There is no association between raised ear and 2 years old gall bladder removal.
2. Viral cold secondary to influenza or untreated sinus infections also shows raised esr.
3. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a commonly performed test but is very nonspecific, which means that having a high ESR does not necessarily tell your physician what is wrong, only that something may be wrong. There fore, I suggest you to go ahead for Montoux test, x-ray chest, complete urine examination and blood culture.
4. Before going for these investigations, check out with ent surgeon for hidden ent infections (sinusitis, lung infections).

thanks for replying .....i was curious to know that most infections have high WBC count, but in my wife's case her WBC 6, RBC 4.5, and platelets are in normal ranges. is this normal ? i m told that its some sort of inflammation . how can one find that where in the body is inflammation particularised to ?

1. Normal White blood cell count 3.5-10.5 billion cells/L or (3,500 to 10,500 cells/mcL). In that way your wive's count (6) counts are normal.
2. White blood cells are present in blood stream, responsible for body’s immune system. There are 5 types with the names neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Each of these is affected in a different way depending on the condition or disease that is affecting your WBC counts.
3. Yes. Depending on the cell type, one can tell bacterial/fungal or viral infection but, it will not give any information related to which body's part got infected.

her urine ph is 5.5. is this worth worrying ? today while coughing she has given out some very very little amount of blood. but she says to feel better after having 2 dosages following drugs prescribed by my doctor for 1 week.
