What Causes Rapid Heart Beat While On Armour Thyroid For Hyperthyroidism?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Sep 2016
Question: Hi, started taking armour thyroid instead of 75 mg of synthroid about a month ago. I felt a lot better other than The dose was too high because my heart was racing. I was on 60 mg then I got put on 45 mg. the heart racing stopped but at night it seems I can feel my heart beat. I'd hate to have to return to synthetic since it didn't help my symptoms. Been on synthroid for 20 yrs I'm only 47 the past 5 yrs I felt like I was 80 with no energy, depressed. Not sure what to do and if this is normal and ok.

Brief Answer:
Check the hormonal level if there are 4 weeks with armor 45 treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
The increase in heart rate is a symptom of hyperthyroidism. If there are 4 weeks or more since you changed from synthroid to armor than you may check the hormonal level and see if the dose is correct.
If hyperthyroidism is confirmed than you have to lower the dose.
Or you may talk in person to an endocrinologist about the possibility to lower the dose ( 30 mcg) and check the hormones after 4 weeks.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
