What Causes Rash On Calf When Suffering From Diabetes?

default
Posted on Thu, 22 May 2014
Question: Hello Dr. Grief: Am age 72, female, Type 2 diabetic for 6 years, controlling it with diet and Metformin. Weigh approx. 225 lbs. In the past few months have developed a rash on left inside calf approx. 8"x6" that feels hard and sometimes warm, but doesn't itch or hurt. I'm US citizen but married to New Zealander for 17 months and live here in NZ. Am working on lifestyle changes to improve my health. Joined Curves and work out 3x wk. Follow vegan diet and do not smoke or drink. Working toward 10,000 steps per day. This article caught my attention. Could this condition of my leg be blood-clot related? I have a PCP here but am not so sure about the quality of medical care. She is a early 50s and trained in S Africa, I have been to her about six times for UTI, back strain, and bronchitis, but she has yet to listen to my heart even or look in my throat. Did do blood test for diabetes and urine test for UTI but otherwise just prescribes meds. I'm just wondering what to do. Does this condition on my leg sound dangerous?

Brief Answer:
Please upload a photo of the lesion.

Detailed Answer:
Dear madam I read your problem in detail and understand your concern.

I am very sorry for the problem you are facing in your legs. I am very happy to know that your sugars are under control, which is very important in prevention complications in future. If you can upload a photo of the lesion I will be better able to help you.
In my best opinion the problem you are facing might be due to diabetic neuropathy. Nothing to feel bad about that because its reversible to certain extent.

The most common reason for the onset of neuropathy is duration of diabetes. This kind of condition may appear in patients who are taking antibiotics for long duration. Your antibiotic will kill some of your useful bacteria in intestine which will help you in making vitamin b complex. Due to reduced amount of vitamin B12 your nerves will start feeling numbness. Advisable to check B12 level in blood.

Treatment is simple from today take vitamin B12 injections once in two days for 5 doses. Then shift to vitamin B12 oral supplements daily once after food daily.

The clot related pain is usually heavy and unbearable. This pain will increase with walking.

kindly get back to me for any further information
Have a speedy recovery.
