What Causes Rash On The Back Of Legs And Lower Back?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jun 2014
Question: For the past 2 months I've been having issues with my skin itching. I developed a rash on the back of my legs and lower back. I went to the dermatologist and he said it was some type of dry skin then prescribed me ammonium lactate cream and to get light therapy 3 times a week. The rash has cleared up but I'm having other issues. Randomly all over my body I'll get stinging sensations or it will feel like my skin is crawling. Little red dots come and go on my body as well as wheals. It's not scabies or anything like that. I've had it going on for a while and no one around me has had any of this happen. This picture is an example of one of the rashes that comes. I didn't scratch or anything it just appears then within 10 minutes or so it's almost gone. My skin is constantly crawling and it's driving me crazy. I feel it on my scalp too.

Brief Answer:
This is urticaria!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this rash and symptoms that you have reported.

After reviewing th picture and information that you have provided, this very much sounds like urticaria. This presents as batches of raised, red or white itchy welts of various sizes that appear and disappear. Some last just a few minutes, while other may take hours or several hours before disappearing. The exact cause is not clear to the medical community though some people have been found to have other disease conditions like lupus, hypothyroidism that may be responsible for this.

Treatment consist in longterm use of antihistamines. Zyrtec/Benadryl, etc have been used with success. For now, I will like you to read more about urticaria from this trusted site and return to me with more question or request for clarifications. Thereafter, we shall make the decision about treatment options.
