What Causes Rash Sores On Both Legs And Arms After Being Allergic To Statin Drugs?

YYYY@YYYY I am seeing my PA tomorrow who had advised me to stop taking both drugs. been off statin for 18 days and sores and rashes are drying up and itching is gone. Been off Onglyza for 6 weeks now. Is it the combination of both drugs that are causing the reaction. I also have allergies and am on maintainence taking 1 injection monthly along with generic zyrtec and generic allegra as well as as generic singulair
The rash sores started in late December 2013, thought the rash that turned into sores was just dry skin because exzcema runs in my family. Sores looked like small postules on the skin. Is there a common ingrediant in the statin drugs that I may be allergic to? I understand that Lipitor is 100% synthetic I will need to find a safe alternative to take to keep my cholestrol and triglycerides in check

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic,
What you could be having could very well be eczema. Eczema runs in your family you mentioned. Dry skin makes eczema worse. There are three things in you which makes dryness worse, 1. Age- As age progresses the oil glands become less active
2. Diabetes- Diabetics have dry skin (Xerosis) 3. Statins- Statins have a property of producing dryness.
Rash produced by medicines are unique and can be clinically diagnosed by dermatologist. You have a feature to upload the images by yourself at the right side of the query page, please utilize that so that I can assess the rash and advise. You can also send the image as attachment to YYYY@YYYY , with the subject as 'Attn: Dr. Johny Chacko'.
For eczema you might need to apply topical steroids till remission. You should apply a moisturizing cream on a daily basis to keep skin oily and supple.
In short, I would like to review the rashes before concluding it as drug allergy.
Hope this helped,
Take care.

Statins
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome back,
If you are allergic to one statin it is better to avoid the entire group because cross sensitivity to other statins are very common because of the similarity in the structure. Your regime of moisturizer, cortizone and benadryl is fine and you may continue the same.
Hope I have answered your query,
Take care.
