What Causes Rashes On Hips, Belly And Arms?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: if you don't mind answering: I have a rash on both sides of my torso, beginning below the hips and going up the two sides, above the belly and up under and (a little) over my arms. Not on my back. Looks like acne. Not painful, only a little itchy occasionally. Don't think it is shingles as no pain. Could it be due to taking viagra two days running? or to an overdose of iron or vitamin B12? I take tablets daily for iron deficiency anaemia and had an injection of B12 from my doctor recently, then a few days after had a steak (first time for months) and I may have taken a multivitamin with B12 in it. Apart from the mysterious anaemia I'm healthy, age 66.

Brief Answer:
Please upload a photograph and provide more information

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM,

I really appreciate your concern and I will try to help you out in best possible way.

But at the outset I would like further information for better assessment of the condition like

If possible upload a photograph of the rashes.
Are you running fever ?
Is there itching present or any kind of discharge if present?
Any other relevant medical history like diabetes or any previous history of skin disease

Iron supplementation may cause rashes as a side effect, Viagra and vitamin B12 generally doesn't cause rashes. However if you can write back to me with these details so that I will be able to tell you more precisely.

Waiting for your reply.
Best wishes

Dear Dr Hudda - thanks for your comments.
I have uploaded 3 photos.
I have had the rash over a week and no, no fever before or now and I have felt well in general, only in January a bad headache for 3 days with a runny nose but no fever. A little itching but nothing serious, and no discharge. I have no history of skin disease, just once a rash caused by glandular fever 40 years ago. No diabetes; however for 10 years I have taken 0.4mg tamsulosine daily, for some difficulty urinating due to enlarged prostate. Also have taken 500mg iron (Ferrograd) daily for a year, as I was found to be anaemic, which I thought was due to haemorrhoids but those were removed and I'm still anaemic, apparently. I was given an infusion of vit. B12 on 15/12/2015 and another on 25/02/2016 - I think that is connected with the anaemia. I had a blood test in August 2015 for a suspected STD - negative results for syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia but it showed a urinary infection with haemophilia influenzae - which was treated as for gonorrhoea/chlamydia and seemed cured. I have had no sexual contact since then and no close skin contact with others since then either. The only allergy I have ever had was once to the metal of a cheap watch, otherwise I have never suffered allergies. The only physical possibilities of allergy or infection I can think of are 1. feeding a stray cat 2. swimming at a fitness club pool 3. trying on swim shorts (over underwear) in a shop.
I hope the photos and information help, although I realise a rash is difficult to diagnose.
Regards, XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a viral infection, chicken pox most likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello
welcome again and thanks for all the details
I have gone through your photographs, rashes on your body has the resemblance with rashes of chickenpox infection.

typical distribution on the body and appearance of rashes like few are crusted and few are vesicular.

possibility of allergy is less likely but it can't be ruled out completely.

So I would advise you to consult a dermatologist for physical examination and further course of action

Meanwhile you should apply calamine lotion and take antiallergic drug like levocetirizine or fexofenadine.

Hope I could answer your question, please feel free to ask for further clarification, I will be happy to help you
Best wishes

I would be surprised if it were chickenpox, as I definitely had that as a child. And if I remember rightly chickenpox was really itchy and I felt ill, whereas this rash isn't really causing much itching and I feel quite normal. From looking on the web, I wonder if it is pityriasis rosea? I see I need to find a dermatologist, but thank you for your opinion.
