Question: My grandson was diagnosed with strep n started on an antibiotic Cephalexin 255/5ml on Friday. He has had a total of 4 doses. Today he broke out with a reddish sandpaper rash around his neck n chest. Last Thursday he complained of sore throat. I'm wondering if this could b scarlet fever or a reaction to the antibiotic?

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to antibiotic being given in mono

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Sore throat can be caused due to some viruses like Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (causes mono), or some bacteria like Streptococcus (causes Strep throat). Unless Strep or Streptococcus has been identified to be the cause, the possibility of it being due to EBV also needs to be kept in consideration. In case of EBV, treatment with antibiotics can give rise to rashes. Probably that is the cause. Possibly stopping the antibiotic would help. Irrespective of the cause, all you need to make him gurgle with lukewarm water and recovery will occur in a week or so.

I would be able to comment on the possibility of Scarlet fever if you can upload an image.
Please be patient. Let me know if I could help further.
