What Causes Rebound Effects Of Stopping Clonidine?
Question: hello. I ve monitored my blood pressure at home for yrs and it usually really good. my bp app gives an average of 114/73 for june=oct of last yr when my monitor broke. occasionally tho I have spikes (I ve cared for my mom who has alzheimers for the past 12 yrs and it's quite stressful) I also have a severe allergy to medicinal fillers. after a stressful period a couple of months ago my Dr prescribed clonidine patch 0.1mg with good resulting. I dvlped a rash thoan and wanted to discontinue but was concerned about rebound. my Dr advised to just wear patch for a longer time. I left it on for 3 weeks then removed it. after about 1 week my bp shot up along with extreme anxiety. my questions are. a me I rebounding? was this an acceptable way to taper...and how long will this last. I ve never had such high numbers or...sometimes 159/99 or such anxiety in my life. thank you so much in advance for your advice.

Thanks for posting your query.
Yes you are having rebound effects of stopping Clonidine. After removing Clonidine Patch were you given any additional oral medications to control your Blood pressure ?
In my opinion once clonidine patch was removed a low dose oral clonidine should have been given .
The rebound symptoms will last for 1 -2 weeks but Blood pressure may persists if no additional anti hypertensive medication is given .
Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask .

Thank you for your quick response. How long will elevated bp persist if I don t take oral clonidine? Now that I ve endured this long I am scared to take more of this evil beast and continue this scenario but I m finding it very difficult to live my life this way. Do u think I should start low dose now or continue to ride this out? It seems to be getting worse but that may be my reaction to the stress this is causing.
Brief Answer:
Bp may remain elevated life long.

Thanks for the follow up.
The BP can remain elevated for life long if no other medicine is added.
Well since there are many other better medicines to control blood pressure I would recommend you not to restart Clonidine but consult your doctor and get an alternative medicine like Telmisartan or Metoprolol.
You can also ask your doctor for a prescription of anti anxiety medicine that will calm you down .
Hope this information was useful to you .
Any clarifications feel free to ask .
