Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: I have had a injury on March 4, 2016. I fractured my right foot and ankle in 6 places. I have swelling in my right leg. I also dislocated my left knee, along with a concussion. And an injury to my right shoulder. I am mainly bed ridden with all the fractures and bone chips. Today I have turned red all over. I am very fair and it is very noticeable. I have had fever off and on all month.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to a lasting infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I would insist you to take a picture of the present condition of your skin. Please upload the image using the facility on the upper right of this page. Also mention if there is associated itchiness and if the skin of those portions seems warmer than the rest.

The on and off fever could be due to an infection. I would insist you to get a blood count done and to share the reports. Also mention the medicines that you are currently taking. Based on your inputs I will be able to guide you further.

Regards

Dr Saha,

I have found that the condition of red skin goes and comes. I have noticed that the nuts I am eating seem to be causing the condition. I have eaten these nuts for years, but it seems that I have consumed too many and have developed a allergic reaction. I panicked because of the many fractures and the fact that I can not move around right now. I contacted my Doctor and he believes the fever is nothing unusual for all the trauma I have right now. And the lack of being able to walk on my right foot or use my left arm. I am going to have a MRI of the foot and ankle on the 13 of April, this is next week. I will give you the results of this procedure. I also had a concussion from the fall and I still have dizziness. The CT scan revealed that I have a bruise on the back of my head with this fall......but it in only on the skull and not inside of the skull. I rattled my brain and this is cause of the concussion. I work as a physical Therapy assistant and just as you may know we jump to panic in these times. We know too much of what can happen and fear the worse. My Doctor is my employer and he said, "calm down and do not self diagnose. I would not send you home with something that is life threatening." I will see him after the MRI. I thank you for your reply to my question and you helped me self diagnose the red skin. And take stock of what I was eating.
I will follow up if anything comes to surface in the future.

Brief Answer:
Your doctor seems to be thinking in the right direction.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the updates and sorry for not being able to respond faster. Your self-diagnosis about an allergic reaction to nuts causing the redness seems logical and in such a case I would insist you to take cetirizine or any other antiallergic off and on as required, during those occasions.
Indeed, both tissue destruction due to trauma as well as some infections can be the cause of fever and there is no need to get alarmed. Since your employer is a doctor, he can keep you under follow up and he would be able to assess if things are going otherwise.

Feel free to contact me back in case of further queries.

Wish you health.

Regards
