What Causes Recurrent Infections Post A Splenectomy?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Mar 2016
Question: Hello

I seem to get recurrent coughs every winter. I do eat healthy and take antioxidants and I'm generally healthy. I'm a 32 year old male. But once winter starts, I get bad coughs with mucous and sometimes it ends up being an infection in the airways and I'd have to take antibiotics. Once it goes away, I seem to get another bad cough. Always with mucous and always persistant. I'm not aware of any allergies that I may have.

Could it be that my immune system is just weak? I had my spleen removed due to an accident. Could that be the reason my immunity is weak? My doctors keeps saying that it's just a virus or bacterial infection but I seem to get sick 3 or 4 times while my wife and kids are fine.

Brief Answer:
Spleen has a role in immunity.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
Spleen has a role in immunity and removal of the spleen does increase your susceptibility to certain infections.
The best defence against recurrent infections is to avoid contact with people who have the infection. If you believe in herbal medicine, there is a product which some of my patients have found beneficial in reducing their recurrent upper respiratory tract infections.

Thank you. I will definitely look into it. What about herbs such as ginger and turmeric. I hear they are very powerful.
