What Causes Recurrent Inflammation In Nose With Yellowish Mucus?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: Hello,
I'm visiting my ENT doctor for almost a year now but I keep getting inflammations.
I started visiting my ENT doctor because I had yellowish mucus comming out of my nose. It turned out I have polyphs in my nose cause my sinuses to block. She subscribed antibiotics and everything went away. I also need to take Avamys spray every day, 2 times a day. This is in order to keep the polyphs smaller.
It seems to work well but every 2 months (max) I still get the yellowisch mucis comming out of my nose. When I visit my ENT doctor she sais "yes, it's inflamed again". So she prescribes anti-biotics again and everything is okay for another 1 or 2 months. I've had 4 antibiotics threatmeants in the last 8 months.
According to my ENT doctor I must be very sensitive and nothing can be done about it.
I'm not sure what to think about this so I wanted to hear the opinion of another ENT doctor..

Brief Answer:
ct scan of paranasal sinuses, blood tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I see similar cases amongst young people who visit my clinic.

As per your details, The most likely cause is allergic rhinitis with nasal polyps.
There are different modalities of treatment for nasal polyps, depending on the polyp size, involvement of sinuses and associated fungal infection.

I suggest you to consult ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, ct scan of paranasal sinuses ( to know polyp extent, other coexist factors like deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy). Blood tests ( absolute eosinophilic count , skin tests) allergic rhinitis.

kindly attach the reports, if you have already done the investigations.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

I have not done these investigations yet. I will ask my ENT doctor to do them ASAP. But it will take a couple of days before I can get a new appointment with my ENT doctor.

I also want to tell this:

Every time, before I start getting yellowish mucus comming out of my nose. Just one or two days before it stars I first feel mucus in my throath. At least, it feels like there's a lot of mucus in my throath every time I swallow. My throath itches. No pain. Just itchy...

Usually, I wake up like that one day. Then one day (or 2 at most) later my throath feels better but I start getting that yellowish mucus from my nose.

My ENT doctor never paid much attention to that.
But now that I'm talking to you: what do you think about that?

Can the feeling in my throath (right before I get yellowisch mucus from my nose) be cause by the problems in my nose (polyps) or could it be something else that first starts in my troath and then gets to my nose?

Kind regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
As a post nasal drip

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Yellowish discharge, is due to sinusitis. As a post nasal drip, it goes back into throat, causes itchiness and pharyngitis(sore throat).

Go ahead for the investigations.

Hope, I have answered your query. Take care.

I just tried to call my ENT doctor but it turns out she's unavailable till December 1st.

I'm not sure what to do right now...

The last 3 days I'm having yellowish mucus comming from my nose. Especially in the morning. The last 2 days I did nose washing (nasal salt water) and in the morning a lot of mucus gets out of my nose that way. After doing that it's clear most of day.

I'm not sure if there's any medications that I should start taking already? Or will I have to leave it like this, untill I can visit my ENT doctor?

I do have "Neobacitracine" nose drops. Maybe it's a good idea to use them, as I can't visit my ENT doctor before December 1st?

Brief Answer:
avamys, steam inhalation

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

You can continue same nasal spray (avamys) and steam inhalations.

In case of fever or head-ache, needs to visit emergency room doctor (non-availability of ent surgeon) for suitable antibiotics.
