Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for your query under HCM forum.
Allergy an accelerated reaction of immune system to allergens ( triggering agents), which cause the skin symptoms in your grand child, & to witness the little one in trouble is really stressful. I understand your concern.
You had already done allergy testing & got the results. In spite of that I have few things to suggest.
* It seems there was concentration on triggers from environment / treatment my medication mainly. From the fact that the exaggerated symptoms were early in morning- I feel it's related to food taken the night before/ bed mites/ personal articles used. management of allergy includes-
- Recognizing allergen in environment, house, food & the personal cosmetics/clothes.
The allergy pricking tests did not mention any food eaten by child as a triggering factor. Many a times baby may be allergic to dairy products, certain pulses,, veges, fruits. I would suggest allergy detection for food also/ maintain a diary to note down the food eaten before baby had severe symptoms. & try to avoid those.
- similarly bed mites are also known to cause skin allergy. Proper cleaning of bed mats with vacuum extraction/ washing bed linen regularly, saying good bye to rugs & use washable blankets. Keeping the bed room mosquito free- are some of the preventive majors that can be applied.discard carpets that cling to dust/ mites.
- keeping bathrooms mold free,
- avoiding entry of pets in bed room/ don't allow baby to play or handle the pet.Avoid playing in grass.
-baby should use cotton clothes, avoid tight fitting synthetic clothes/ undergarments.Observation of flaring symptoms after use of cosmetics & avoiding once those which are triggers is needed.
* Management - Allergic reaction is a viscous circle of, exposure to allergen- bodily reaction( histmin release)-symptoms- scratching- exaggerated symptoms- more bodily reaction & so on. So management should be aimed at-
- Avoiding exposure to allergen,
- medication till & few days after the rash disappears & be on maintenance dose as per pediatric allergy specialist.( usually anti allergic drugs/ cortisone are given as per need,/in tapering doses)
- allergy testing & desensitization treatment as per allergy specialist's advise.
* To be on guard for- respiratory allergic symptoms ( cold, bronchitis) or exematous skin involvement is needful
sever allergic reaction with swelling of lips/ eyes need to be attended by an expert. Please avoid managing it at home.
* Followed by-
- continuous avoidance of allergens ( food/ environment, personal articles in use)
- medicines as per advise/ application of ointment or lotion to avoid recurrence
- To be on guard in seasonal allergies
I feel, though allergy is a tedious condition to manage, a methodical approach by observation & maintenance of diary, expert pediatric allergy specialist's advise, after investigations & specific follow up would definitely lead you to solution & your grand son would be out of the problem.
I hope, the answer was both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks,
prevent exposure to allergen/ expert's advise/medication/desensitization
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for your follow up query.
- The skin rash as you describe ,in form of insect bite like itchy bumps are more commonly from food allergies / insect bites/medicines allergy/ pets saliva.
- Food does not produce allergic reaction in throat( because it is swallowed from there,)The allergen in food items - get absorbed from gut to enter blood. Through blood it reaches to all the body( sinuses, lungs, throat) & so also skin ( in your grand sons case,)- causes allergic reaction & symptoms in skin/ soft tissues/ junction of skin & mucus membrane.
- The reaction on lips/ eyes tend to spread fast with respiratory involvement.- so it is advised to be treated vigorously under a doctor's care.
-Allergic reaction may disappear within minutes or it may take few days to go. What is needed as I had already explained is to-
- Identify the (trigger) allergen by testing/ observation & diary maintenance
- Avoid contact with the allergen..
- Take anti allergic medicines/ steroids for sufficiently long time ( as per doctor's advise) to break the vicious circle of allergic reaction, symptoms & exposure to allergens.
- Maintenance dose to be continued ,to delay/ prevent recurrence.
*I still think checking for food allergies/ insect bites to be treated by desensitization after expert advise of pediatric allergy specialist to help the baby permanently.
I hope that helps you.Any follow up query is welcome. Please grade the answer before closing it.
Thanks.
.
I hope the point is clear to you.
