What Causes Recurrent Vitamin D Deficiency, Muscle Weakness And Atopic Skin Allergy?

Question: Hello,

My GP found my vitamin D deficiency back in May this year, I took 8 weeks of oral vitamin D supplement therapy, they checked my vitamin D level again after the 8 weeks therapy ended. My muscle weakness and back pain improved during the summer, I was well and had enough energy to do daily activity.

I started feeling of fatigue in early September after I got insect bite on my neck at the end of August, it was swollen badly, shortly after that back pain came back even harder, neck pain started and have chronic stiffness in my upper body also fingers and headache has been unbearable became almost daily event. No fevers, but BP has been elevated dramatically. Little movement made me sweat and I needed to sit down occasionally. My born hurts all over my body including skull, hard to walk and off balance. Currently it is very hard to do light house work or even hard to move my body for changing clothes. I eventually developped symptoms of possible heart problem (chest pain from chest to jaw, tooth ache, throat tightness, short of breath) occasionally while I was sleeping and sitting since October (I was sent to Cardiologist, he ordered Nuclear stress test and Echo and I was schduled to have the testing on 12/23/14). My chrestrol level all looked well with recent blood testing.

I was also sent to Rheumatologist, I was told my back x-ray looked normal, my blood rheumatoid level was also normal. My thyroid blood test was normal. My GP said, they found vitamin D deficiency again. My GP prescribed vitamin D pills again. I was wondering I just got my vitamin D level back up to normal level in August, also I am generally an active person to go out doors, drink milk daily, eat healthy. I am 51, Female and had difficulity with several Cellulitis, GERD, chronic hives and sudden onset of Atopic skin allergy (found numerous eosinophils in skin biopsy in April) along with nausea and swallowing problem (allergic reaction?) since last winter. Actual Allergen was not found clearly but I was told I have environemntal allergies.

My question is: Do you have any idea of what causing my recurrent Vitamin D deficiency? I need extra set of eyes to help my GP, I want to feel better soon and go back my normal living schedule ASAP. Last time I took Vitamin D therapy, it took a month to feel better. It is only 3 months to have vitamin D deficiency again after stopped taking the supplement. If my GP can figure out the cause of my recurrent vitamin D deficiemcy quickly with your helpful second opinion, it would be able to improve my health quickly and also I would be able to avoid repeating this Vitamin D deficiency problem.

Thank you,

Brief Answer:
Sun exposure is important to prevent recurrence.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

After going through your query I concluded that you got vitamin D3 deficiency which is recurring. I think that exposure to sunlight is important. As it mostly related to exposure to sunlight, dietary deficiencies is not a issue. I think it is less sunlight exposure which leads to recurrent vitamin D3 deficiency. 10000IU of vitamin D3 are produced in 30 minutes of whole body exposure in humans. Exposure is very important. As daily requirement is nearly 1000 IU per day. So nearly 100 days of requirement is met in half an hour of full body exposure with bright sunlight between 11 AM to 4 PM .

Alternatively you can take 60000 IU of vitaminD3 once in a month with milk to prevent its recurrence.

You can discuss with your Doctor it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then please don't hesitate to write me. I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.

Take care.
