Brief Answer:
The cause can be either infection or remains unidentified.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Pericardiocentesis is the aspiration of fluid from the pericardial space that surrounds the heart.

Pericardial effusions (abnormal collection of fluid in heart and pericardium) are mainly caused by inflammation of the pericardium, a condition called pericarditis. The causes are,

1) Viral infections (cytomegalovirus, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses) or bacterial infections (e.g. tuberculosis) are one of the main causes of pericarditis and pericardial effusions.

Other uncommon causes could be,

2)Injury to the pericardium or heart from a medical procedure.

3) myocardial infarction,

4) Autoimmune disease (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)

However,In a large number of people with pericardial effusion, no cause can be identified which are called idiopathic pericardial effusions.

Your aspirated fluid can be sent for laboratory examination to detect infection.

Your treating cardiologist will know about that and can diagnose it but in large number of cases the cause remains unidentified.

Hope this will help you.
