What Causes Red Lines On Eyes And Dull Eye Pain?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 Jan 2015
Question: For around 5 days I have had some red lines on both of my eyes. I use a computer for a long time each day, and after a few hours on the computer my eyes start to have a dull ache that increases in intensity as the day goes on. If I rest my eyes for awhile, the dull ache diminishes relatively quickly.

I have tried to find out online what it could be, but nothing really seems to match my symptoms.
*Affecting Both Eyes
*Some red lines on both eyes
*Dull ache (after using my eyes for awhile)

What is the most likely the cause of this and how serious is it? Also, Will it get better as time goes on or is there anything I can do on my own to help my eyes recover. I really don't want to visit a doctor If I don't need to, as I really can't afford it at the moment.

Brief Answer:
It is computer vision syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having redness of eyes associated with dull ache following use of computer.

This is a common problem and it is called as computer vision syndrome. The basic problem in this condition is dryness of eyes caused by exposure to computer screen.

This is not a serious condition and this can be treated and prevented with appropriate measures, hence no need to worry.

The treatment is mainly by use of artificial tears eye drops. I prefer to use preservative free tears like refresh tears 1-4 times per day. The treatment is usually required for 1-3 months.

Along with treatment few precautions as mentioned below will help in symptomatic relief.
1. Avoid continuous exposure to computer screen by taking frequent breaks in between. A break for about 2-3 minutes after working for 1 continuous hour is sufficient.
2. Wah the eyes with normal water 1-2 times a day.
3. Avoid exposure to dust, smoke, wind....
4. Use of antiglare coated computer monitor or antiglare glasses.
5. Avoid use of air conditioner, fan as far as possible.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
