What Causes Red Pustules Under Eyes Of Infant?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: My 6 month old baby started with what looked like an allergy...red under his eyes...this turned large puss filled bumps under his right lid and a large puss filled bump on top of his left lid. We did a round of anti biotics and eurythromicin on his eyes. the puss drained but the lower lids looks red and another bump is forming on the lower lid. The eye doctor said it was chalazion but the pictures that I see online do not have the redness under the eyes that he has. We have tried hot compress but nothing seems to work. Could this be something else? This all happened after he received 4 vaccines within one months times.

Brief Answer:
it looks like case of blepharitis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through the query and picture uploaded by you and it looks to me a case of blepharitis(inflammation of eyelids) secondary to seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff in the scalp).

Chalazion is generally secondary to blepharitis.

I would suggest you to use clean warm water compress, wash the eyes from inside out with warm sterile water with clean cloth, use separate cloth for each eye.

Also ciplox (ciprofloxacin) eye drops 1 drop in each eye 3 to 4 times a day and application of neosprin eye ointment to eyelids will help cover the infection.

Rarely you may need oral antibiotics like amoxycillin and antiinflammatory medicines like brufen or paracetamol.

Hope I helped you.

What would cause this? I have two other kids and they have never had anything like this. Does the infection spread from one eyelid to the other? He had a swollen eyelid with around pus filled nodule on his eyelid and now in that same area on his lower eyelid another one is starting to form so I'm wondering if it's because it was touching the upper eyelid.

Brief Answer:
here are the details

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
It may be due to seborrheic dermatitis that is dandruff in the scalp.
Sometimes opening of the sweat gland may be blocked due to some reason leading to stasis of bacteria thus causing infection.
It may spread from one eye to other eye as the child may rub one and other eye with same hand.
Pus filled nodule is stye which is secondary to blepharitis.
Treatment already explained.
Hope i helped you.
