What Causes Red Rash On Legs,arms And Torso?
Question: I have a red rash on my legs arms torso, butt, armpits, groan which is extremely itchy. I am taking zertec, 5 mg, (10 mg made me too sleepy and I could not fuction well and not able to drive. I have tied hydeocortisoneointment USP,2,5% with no help. I had my first of two doses of Betamethasone DP .05% about 7 hours ago and I continue to have sever itching. It starts with small red spots that get larger over time. I first appeared on my R leg after dry skin and itching (thought it was just winter dry skin) that area is a mass red patch about 7" by 2".
There is the same type of patch on my left leg as well as multiple red spots down and around my leg. The red spots are also on my shoulders, arms, arm ptis, thighs, groan, back side, back, back/side of neck. Clothing is irritating. Some spots have grown together to look like patches. I have bruising from scratching.
I have diabetes, kidney diease, and OA. I am 74 yrs old and in relative good health. I have not changed my diet nor come incontact with any chemical not changed my laudry detergent.
What could be the cause ???????????/

Such itchy red rash can be due to :
1) tinea corporis : it is fungal infection of skin characterized by red colored itchy rash usually with annular morphology that is central clearing and prominent margins.
It is more common in diabetics.
2) allergic contact dermatitis: it is characterized by itchy rash involving body.
I will advice you not to apply steroidal cream over the rash till the diagnosis is confirmed.
You may take antihistaminics like fexofenadine/ levocetrizine for symptomatic relief till the time.
