Question: My mouth and throat are red and sore. Lips hurt like crazy. Went to ER and got Azithrowmycin and prednison - seems not to be working. Tongue is very red. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Could be nutritional deficiencies- needs blood tests

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having sore tongue and throat pain. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any difficulty in swallowing?
Is your sore tongue associated with any ulcer?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

Here my possibility and further management:

As per your clinical details, it appears to be acute pharyngitis with glossitis.

I suggest you to consult ENT surgeon and give detailed history (dentures, burns due to hot foods, medication history or diabetes), ENT examination for infections (yeast), and blood tests for nutritional deficiencies (iron, folic acid or vitamin B12). Depending on the examination, treatment can be started.

Meanwhile, I suggest you avoid irritants (such as hot or spicy foods, alcohol, and tobacco) to ease discomfort.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health

I forgot to mention that all my blood, urine and ekg tests came out normal. Only thing I did not get was a cat scan and was a bit dehydrated, so got bag of saline and sent home.

Brief Answer:
nutritional deficiency most likely

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Some oral lesions can be diagnosed only through local examination (oral thrush or glossitis), biopsy, culture or blood tests.

Getting dehydration followed by intravenous fluids infusion suggests, some form of nutritional deficiency.

Kindly evaluate.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
